Wine Safari 93/100 MW Greg Sherwood
Why we love this wine?
Τhis Santorini Assyrtiko from Artemis Karamolegos winery is sourced from 100% ancestral vines exceeding 120 years of age. 34 refers to the 34 centuries continuous viticulture in the island and is an ode to the Santorinean heritage. The 2019 vintage has matured on the lees for approximately 9 months. It includes a very rigorous selection from the best parcels in the villages of Pirgos, Exo Gonia, Fira, Aktotiri and Megalochori. 10% of the blend has matured in third use oak for 5 months. Total production is 16.000 bottles.
With a char-grilled fresh calamari.
100% Assyrtiko from ancestral vines exceeding 120 years of age.
The name “34” is a reference to a minimum of 3400 years of uninterrupted
grape-growing in the island of Santorini.
The wine spends 9 months on its fine lees.
Gunfint and chalk on the tight and smoky mineral nose. Some waxy citrus and lemon blossoms also. On the palate it is bone-dry, concentrated and extractive. Supremely fresh and linear with sale nature and flavors of crushed oyster shells and grapefruit. Persistent, focused and full of life and energy. Extremely long and complete, with a touch of fresh almonds in the aftertaste. It needs time to open up and it will last for long.
10+ years following the vintage.
